The building is owned and maintained by The Riley-Smith Hall Charitable Company, a registered charity.
There is a general misconception that the hall is still owned by John Smith's Brewery. In fact the Riley - Smith family (then owners of John Smith's Brewery) did commission the hall which opened in 1924. However in 1992 John Smiths brewery put the building up for sale following a takeover from a larger parent company. With donations from local residents and businesses as well as Tadcaster Town Council enough funds were raised to buy the hall for the continued benifit of the community.
The Riley Smith Hall Charitable Company was formed and in 1992 it became the new independent owners of the hall. The hall is run by volunteers and all the income generated by bookings is put back into caring for the hall.
What the hall has to offer:
A sprung, wooden ballroom floor, one of only a couple in the north of England
Three fully licensed bars (available at no extra cost)
Banqueting capacity of 250 persons
First floor supper / function room
A raked stage and orchestra pit for theatre productions
Conference seating for 362 persons including balcony
Dressing room and backstage facilities for performers
Projection room and lighting
Disabled access and facilities
Excellent catering to suit any budget - from tea & coffee to a sit down meal.
During the week the hall can be hired for as little as £50
This is the attractive art deco style 'supper room' on the first floor of the Hall. The room can comfortably seat 60 people. Here the room is being used for drinks prior to a show. It is also used for show rehersals, parties, dance classes, more intimate dinner parties and clubs. The room can be hired seperate from the main hall and a bar can be provided.
This is one of the three bars in the Hall.
How can I help?
The Riley smith hall is run as a charity for the benifit of the local comunity, and thus is run by volunteers.
The halls trustees and everyone who helps with the running of the hall volunteer their time for free.
Help is often required for the following things:
Cleaning
Helping layout chairs and tables for events.
Clearing the hall after events
Donations towards the running of the hall
Hall maintenance.
If you can help with any of these things, even just for an hour a week your contribution would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to get involved please contact Lucy Tate on 07877 691259. Or via e-mail on tate_lucy@hotmail.co.uk
Last night of the Proms Organised alongside John Smiths Brewery to celebrate 250 years of brewing in Tadcaster this event raised hundreds of pounds for the hall.
